The enduring symbol of piracy, the Jolly Roger. Sometimes credited to the infamous pirate, John "Jack" Rackham ("Calico Jack"), the image of a leering skull over two crossed swords, or sometimes, two crossed bones, has inspired writers, artists, and other pirates for centuries. Notably, Rackham employed women among his crew, including Mary Read and Anne Bonny. Bonny's last words to Rackham before his execution were said to have been, "Had you fought like a man, you need not have been hang'd like a dog." Calico Jack's accomplishments as a pirate were meager, but nonetheless, Rackham's legend made him one of the giants of the Golden age of Piracy
